LSA - Pool Play Rules
|
|
The STATE volleyball tournament is patterned after the Olympics, allowing
all teams to play in groups, or "pools", to determine the teams that will
advance to final rounds of play. Each pool consists of four teams,
and the final rounds consist of eight teams. All the teams in the
pool play each other. The winner of the pool advances to the final
rounds. Wildcard teams are added to the final round if the number
of pools is less than eight. For example, twenty-eight teams
were in the girls division in the '97 tournament. Seven pools were
established. The seven pool winners, and one wild card team enters
the final rounds. Here is the tie-break scenario.
Tie-Breaking Formulae Within Pools
In cases where the win-loss record of matches does not present clear-cut
pool standings, tie-breaking formulae shall be applied as follows:
-
1. Head-to-Head Competition - between or among tied teams.
-
2. Least Number of Games Lost - in pool play.
-
3. Most Number of Games Won - in pool play.
-
4. Greatest Average Point Differential - in pool play. This number
shall be arrived at by subtracting "opponent total points" from "team total
points", and dividing the result by the "number of games played".
-
5. Coin Toss
Tie-Breaking Formulae for the "Wildcard" Team
After the pool winners are determined, the remaining teams will enter the
wildcard catagory. The wildcard team(s) that best fit the following
criteria will enter the final round.
-
1. Win-Loss Record - in pool play.
-
-
5. Coin Toss.
